At Muir Way, we believe in providing the utmost quality, design, and value.
By 1963, Puerto Rico was in the middle of one of the most dramatic economic transformations of the 20th century. Launched in 1947 under the island's first elected governor, Luis Muñoz Marín, the program known as Operación Manos a la Obra — Operation Bootstrap — used tax incentives to draw new industry to the island and shift its economy from agriculture toward manufacturing. In just over a decade, average manufacturing wages roughly doubled, new roads, electrical grids, and housing spread across the island, enrollment in vocational schools climbed from a few thousand students to well over a hundred thousand, and life expectancy rose by nearly 23 years. This map captures Puerto Rico's topography in the middle of that remarkable era of growth.
We georeferenced the original 1963 survey and added shaded relief using modern digital elevation data, giving the island's mountains and coastline a vivid sense of depth. It's printed flat on fine art paper — the 3D effect comes entirely from the shading, not any raised surface — so it frames just like any fine art print.
For an added atmospheric touch, this map is available with or without a layer of clouds — purely a style choice, with no effect on the printed detail below.
Please note: text on this map can be difficult to read due to its small original font size and age. In areas where the relief shading covers the text, the underlying lettering is not legible — we recommend the largest available size for the best detail, though some text may still be covered in darker areas.
