In 1909, Alaska wasn't yet a U.S. territory — it was still organized as the District of Alaska, three years before becoming the Territory of Alaska in 1912, and half a century before statehood in 1959. This map captures the land at that transitional moment.
We georeferenced the original 1909 map and added shaded relief using modern digital elevation data, bringing Alaska's mountain ranges, glaciers, and coastline into convincing three-dimensional depth. The dimension is created entirely through printed shading — it's flat to the touch, not raised, so it frames like any fine art print. Choose the cloud version for a more atmospheric look, or the clean version to let the terrain stand on its own.
A note on legibility: this map preserves the original 1909 lettering, so some labels are small, and text beneath the darkest shading can be hard to read. Our largest size shows the clearest detail.
