At Muir Way, we believe in providing the utmost quality, design, and value.
A geologic map is designed to inform, not decorate — its colors simply mark where different rock formations and sediment layers reach the surface, grouped by age and type. But that same information, laid across an entire country, often produces something unexpectedly beautiful, and Iraq is no exception: the flat sweep of young sediment laid down over millennia by the Tigris and Euphrates appears as a vast, calm wash of color across the lowlands, while the folded foothills in the northeast break into tight, colorful ripples where the collision of continental plates crumpled the crust.
It's a fitting backdrop for a region with such a layered past. Between the Tigris and Euphrates, the ancient region of Mesopotamia — much of which lies within modern Iraq — gave rise to some of humanity's most enduring achievements. The Sumerians developed cuneiform, one of the earliest writing systems, around 3400 BCE; Hammurabi's 18th-century BCE legal code remains one of the oldest and most complete sets of laws ever recorded; and Babylonian mathematicians created the base-60 number system we still use today to divide an hour into 60 minutes and a circle into 360 degrees.
We georeferenced the original 1986 Iraq Geological map and applied modern digital elevation data to add true shaded relief to the landscape. The shading is printed flat on the paper — not raised or textured — so it frames and hangs like any fine art print.
Available unframed, or framed in black or walnut.
Note on legibility: text on the original map is small and can be difficult to read given the map's age. In areas where the relief shading is darkest, the underlying labels are not legible. We recommend the largest available size for the best detail.
