By 1981, the Appalachian Trail had been a continuous, marked footpath for over 40 years — roughly 2,190 miles from Springer Mountain, Georgia to Mount Katahdin, Maine, and a designated National Scenic Trail since 1968. This map traces that route through the ridgelines and valleys of the Appalachians.
We georeferenced the original 1981 trail map and added shaded relief using modern digital elevation data, so the mountains the Trail climbs and descends read in convincing three-dimensional depth. That dimension is created entirely through printed shading — it's flat to the touch, not raised, so it frames like any fine art print.
A note on legibility: this map preserves the original 1981 lettering, so some labels are small, and text beneath the darkest shading can be hard to read. Our largest size shows the clearest detail.
