Eastern Smelt and Alaska Smelt

Originally published in the 1884 edition of the "The Fisheries and Fishery Industries of the United States", this reproduction print of the Eastern Smelt and Alaska Smelt was drawn by H.L. Todd. It was part of the first book in a multi-volume series produced by George Brown Goode, the famed ichthyologist (fish scientist), Smithsonian museum administrator, and U.S. Fish Commissioner. He managed a large staff of scientists, researchers, and clerical employees to produce this monumental work on American Fisheries.  We are happy to make available the amazingly detailed drawings included in the first volume of the series as reproduction prints.

Reproduction Print - A Fine Art Paper print from a high-resolution scan of the original print. It is an exact replica, with all the character and detail, but on our heavyweight archival paper and inks.

Size - 8.5 x 11 inches (no additional border)

This print is a really neat piece. We love cephalopods so it was right up our alley.

Great Gift

I gave this to someone that’s tough to get a reaction out of when it comes to gifts, and he seemed to really, genuinely like it, remarking that it was “so thoughtful” of me. I was thrilled. I’m giving it four stars instead of five because I had hoped the quality of the paper and especially the ink would be more impressive. Also, this isn’t a big deal, but it would have been a nice touch to include a little card with the description of the print to give with the gift. I ended up typing up my own based on the website copy and he chose to save it. I think knowing the origin/story behind the print makes it a more meaningful gift. Overall, I’m pleased with the purchase!

Nice memento to a fish I love

Happy to stumble on this find. Used to keep these Lookdowns at the aquarium store I worked at in high school and nice to have the memento on my wall.
