This map descends from an 1878 geological map of Ireland published by London cartographer Edward Stanford, drawing on survey work from the Geological Survey of Ireland alongside the earlier mapping of Sir Richard Griffith and J. Beete Jukes, professor of geology at Dublin's Royal College of Science. The original used color coding to distinguish 22 rock strata across the island, while still marking out the everyday landscape — towns and villages, railways and canals, lighthouses, and the heights of its mountains.
Muir Way georeferenced that original and added shaded relief built from modern digital elevation data, so Ireland's central lowlands and the mountain ranges ringing its coast — the Wicklows, Macgillycuddy's Reeks, the Sperrins — read with real topographic depth. It's printed flat on fine art paper; the 3D effect comes from the shading alone, not from any raised or textured surface.
Note on legibility: the original's small typeface and age mean some text is faint, and in areas where the relief shading is darkest the underlying labels aren't legible. We suggest the largest available size for the best detail, though some labels in the darkest areas may still be obscured.

Looks great. I got the larger one, and the place names are clear and easy to read, except in some of the shadows, which is fine and expected. Beautiful map and high quality frame. Very happy with it.
