In 1901, Iceland was still governed as a Danish dependency, its affairs overseen by a Minister for Iceland who answered to Copenhagen, not Reykjavík. That changed just three years later, in 1904, when the Home Rule Act took effect and Hannes Hafstein became the first Minister for Iceland accountable to the Althing, Iceland's own parliament — a milestone on the path to full sovereignty in 1918 and the republic declared in 1944.
We georeferenced the original 1901 survey and applied modern digital elevation data to add true shaded relief to Iceland's volcanic highlands and fjord-carved coastline. The shading is printed flat on the paper — not raised or textured — so it frames and hangs like any fine art print.

Note on legibility: text on the original map is small and can be difficult to read given the map's age. In areas where the relief shading is darkest, the underlying labels are not legible. We recommend the largest available size for the best detail.
