In 1905, the year this geological map was drawn, France's Third Republic was in the middle of one of its defining fights: the law formally separating church and state passed that December, ending the Concordat that had bound them together since Napoleon. The map itself catalogs the country's underlying geology — the granite of the Massif Central, the limestone basins around Paris, the folded ranges of the Alps and Pyrenees along its borders.
Muir Way georeferenced the original 1905 survey and added shaded relief using modern digital elevation data, so those same mountain ranges and river basins read with real topographic depth. It's printed flat on fine art paper — the 3D look comes from the shading alone, not from any raised or textured surface.
Note on legibility: because of the map's small original typeface and age, some text is faint, and labels beneath the darkest relief shading aren't legible. We suggest the largest available size for the clearest read, though some darker areas may still obscure fine print.

I'm so happy I found out about Sean Conway on Twitter and went back to his profile to realize he had actually started selling his relief maps on Muir Way. It is beautiful in my living room in Paris and my roommates absolutely love it too. The shipping and framing cost was going to be too high so I framed it here at a local frame store and the one little issue is that it isn't exactly 36x38 inch (which isn't even its own standard in France) and that I had to put the map out of its tube and roll it out to measure it to have the frame made. Otherwise no problem at all with the shipping and the map is even more gorgeous in real life !
