Description
"Alpi Occidentali" — the Western Alps — span the borders of France, Italy, and Switzerland and include some of the range's most storied summits, among them Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa, and the Matterhorn. By the time this geological survey was published in 1908, the peaks themselves had already been climbed decades earlier during the Golden Age of Alpinism in the 1850s and 60s. This map instead reflects the era that followed, when European geographic institutes turned to detailed scientific survey of the high peaks, now increasingly accessible to a growing public of tourists and climbers via new rail lines and mountain huts.
We georeferenced the original 1908 survey and applied modern digital elevation data to add true shaded relief to the Western Alps' dramatic peaks and valleys. The shading is printed flat on the paper — not raised or textured — so it frames and hangs like any fine art print.
Available with or without our signature cloud overlay for a more atmospheric effect, and in your choice of black frame, walnut frame, or unframed.
Note on legibility: text on the original map is small and can be difficult to read given the map's age. In areas where the relief shading is darkest, the underlying labels are not legible. We recommend the largest available size for the best detail.
