This map descends from the USGS topographic survey of the Grand Canyon led by geologist François Matthes and topographic engineer Richard T. Evans, first published in 1927 and reprinted through 1948 in a joint effort with the National Park Service. Evans, filling in the map's blank spaces, drew on Arthurian legend for many of the canyon's formation names — Lancelot Point and King Arthur Castle among them — leaving a distinctive mark on the canyon's map still used today.
Muir Way georeferenced this 1948 edition and added shaded relief using modern digital elevation data, bringing out the canyon's mile-deep walls and the network of side canyons carved into them. It's printed flat on fine art paper — the 3D effect comes from the shading alone, not from any raised or textured surface.
Available with or without our added cloud layer for a more atmospheric, surreal look.
Note on legibility: because of the map's small original typeface and age, some text is faint, and labels beneath the darkest relief shading aren't legible. We suggest the largest available size for the clearest read, though some darker areas may still obscure fine print.
