Description

Explore the lunar frontier through the eyes of 19th-century astronomers.

This astronomical masterpiece required fifteen years of patient observation to create. The Carte General de la Lune stands as one of the most precise lunar maps of the 19th century. It was created from the meticulous work of amateur astronomer Casimir Marie Gaudibert and overseen by Camille Flammarion, founder and president of the Société astronomique de France. Beyond its function as a historical moon map, it documents humanity's systematic effort to chart our celestial neighbor.

Gaudibert's dedication to lunar observation was legendary among his contemporaries. He studied the Moon's surface with remarkable accuracy for over fifteen years. When Léon Fenet compiled this comprehensive 1877 map under Camille Flammarion's supervision, it included an impressive key identifying 509 distinct craters. Gaudibert's precision earned him immortality when a lunar crater was named in his honor. The map's reputation became so renowned that Bertaux later used Gaudibert's data to create a three-dimensional lunar globe. This extended the astronomer's legacy beyond paper into tactile exploration.

Our reproduction preserves Fenet's original cartography with contemporary archival standards. This vintage lunar chart is carefully remastered from a high-resolution digital scan of the 1877 original. This maintains every detail of Gaudibert's painstaking observations and Flammarion's scientific oversight. We make and ship each print from our San Diego facility using premium archival materials. This astronomical print brings 19th-century lunar science into modern homes.
