The Hawaiian Islands are living proof of one of the most remarkable processes in geology: a fixed hotspot deep in the Earth's mantle has been punching new volcanoes through the slowly moving Pacific Plate for millions of years, building the island chain one link at a time. Kauai, the oldest of the main islands, formed roughly 5.5 million years ago; the Big Island, still growing today directly over the hotspot, is under a million years old. This 1971 topographic map captures the islands at the heart of that process — from Mauna Loa's summit on the Big Island to the Na Pali Coast on Kauai.
Explore Hawaii's topography and bathymetry (underwater topography) in stunning 3D Raised Relief, an original creation from Muir Way. This unique map undergoes a meticulous printing, heating, and vacuum-forming process over an intricately detailed 3D mold, letting you visually and tactilely explore the state's diverse terrain, including underwater.
Framed maps do not have glass or acrylic over them, so you can touch the map and explore its intricacies.
*This map is considered oversized and does not qualify for free shipping to Hawaii.
PLEASE NOTE
You will love this map if you embrace its anomalies. The image may be slightly altered when the plastic is heated and stretched over the 3D mold, causing warped lines and text around higher elevations. The fine print on plastic is not as sharp as on paper, sometimes rendering very small text illegible.
