The Dymaxion map — or Fuller map — is one of the most inventive world map projections ever created. Buckminster Fuller unfolded the globe onto a flat icosahedron so the continents appear as one nearly continuous landmass, first published in Life magazine in 1943. In 1954, Fuller refined it with cartographer Shoji Sadao into the version most commonly used today — and the version you see here.
Unlike a Mercator or Gall-Peters projection, the Dymaxion distorts far less of the relative size and shape of land and ocean, making it one of the more geographically honest ways to represent the whole Earth on a flat surface.
We applied digital elevation data and hand-shaded relief to both land and sea, giving the map convincing three-dimensional depth. That dimension is created entirely through printed shading — it's flat to the touch, not raised, so it frames beautifully like any fine art print.
