The Origin And Mission Of Muir Way
Inspired by the transformative power of national parks, I founded Muir Way after a trip to Yosemite. My aim was to create maps that sparked memories of the places we love most and to inspire us to find new places to explore. Since 2013, we have been printing each map in our San Diego shop, using materials made in the USA, and prioritize eco-friendly packaging.
By supporting Muir Way, you're not just acquiring maps; you're preserving the spirit of adventure and contributing to the protection of our natural wonders through our donations to the Sierra Club Foundation, Leave No Trace, and the Waterkeeper Alliance.
Thank you for being part of our journey.

FAQ
Are these maps old or new?
The original map designs are from historical maps. We use scans of the old maps and georeference them with modern elevation data to accurately align the raised terrain with the map. Then, we cut a detailed mold based on the elevation data. The maps get printed, heated, and vacuum formed onto the mold. We remove the newly formed map from the mold, cut it, and mount it onto matboard for a rigid raised relief map. The 3D maps we sell are only available by Muir Way.
Can I get it in a different size?
We only offer them in a single size because they are vacuum formed to a particular 3D mold. Each mold takes up to 40 hours to cut.
What are they made out of?
The maps are printed on a thick plastic that is highly formable under extreme heat.
Do the frames have glass?
Our frames do not have glass over the 3D prints. We prefer them this way so you can touch the protruding terrain. If you'd like glass, your local frame shop can make a deeper frame that will allow for the glass.
Are these like the ones in my classroom when I was a kid?
They are inspired by those older raised relief maps but our new versions are on another level of quality, precision, and craftsmanship.
What is your return policy?
For any reason, you can send back the print within 30 days of receiving it for a full refund. The print must be in new condition. We do not accept returns on framed prints.
How long does it take to get?
Unframed maps ship out in 1-2 days and framed maps ship out in 2-3 weeks of ordering. Please also allow transit time from our shop in San Diego.
